The statewide portal connects to all Texas death records from 1903 onward regardless of which local office registered the record.

How to Get a Certified Copy

Beaumont residents can request a certified death certificate in person, online through the city portal or statewide systems, by mail, or through the Texas DSHS.

In person at the Jefferson County Clerk (1149 Pearl Street, Beaumont). Bring valid photo ID, complete the request form, and pay the fee. In-person requests are usually processed the same day during business hours.

Online through the City of Beaumont Health Department's portal at beaumonttx.permitium.com for city-registered deaths. You can also order through Texas.gov or VitalChek for statewide access. Service fees apply. Allow 7 to 14 business days for delivery.

By mail, send a completed application, a copy of your photo ID, and a check or money order payable to "Jefferson County Clerk" to the courthouse at 1149 Pearl Street, Beaumont, TX 77701. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Allow 3 to 4 weeks.

Through DSHS at dshs.texas.gov/vs/death. The state fee is $20 for the first copy and $3 for each additional. Expedited processing is $25.

For any request, include the full name of the deceased, the date of death, and Jefferson County as the location. If you know whether the death occurred within Beaumont city limits, noting that helps the office direct you to the right records.

Who Can Access These Records

Texas restricts death records for 25 years following the date of death. During the restricted period, only immediate family members and certain other qualified people can access these records. After 25 years the record is public.

Immediate family means the spouse, parent, child, sibling, and grandparent of the deceased. Attorneys representing the estate and licensed funeral directors may also qualify in some situations.

To get a restricted record, show valid photo ID and proof of your relationship to the deceased. Birth certificates, marriage licenses, and court orders are typically acceptable. Contact the Jefferson County Clerk at 409-835-8475 to confirm what documents they need before visiting or mailing a request.

Records older than 25 years are fully public. Any person can request a copy with valid photo ID. No family relationship needs to be shown. Texas records go back to 1903 in the statewide system.

Genealogists working on Jefferson County and Southeast Texas family history have access to older records through the county clerk and online platforms. Beaumont's long history as a refining and shipping center means the area attracted diverse populations in the early 20th century, and records from that period are particularly valuable for family research in the region.

Jefferson County charges the standard Texas fee: $21 for the first certified copy and $4 per additional copy ordered at the same time. The City of Beaumont Health Department follows the same fee structure for city-registered records.

DSHS charges $20 for the first copy and $3 for each additional. Expedited DSHS processing is $25. Online platforms including the city portal, VitalChek, and Texas.gov add their own service fees on top of the base amount.

The Jefferson County Clerk accepts cash, check, and credit or debit card at the counter. Mail requests require a check or money order. Do not send cash through the mail.

For estate purposes, order all the certified copies you need at once. Insurance companies, banks, pension programs, and the probate court each typically need their own original. Buying extras in a single order is less expensive per copy than placing several separate requests over time.

Texas Law and Death Records

Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 191 governs vital records registration statewide. Both the Jefferson County Clerk and the City of Beaumont Health Department operate under Chapter 191. The law sets registration deadlines (10 days from death), the 25-year restriction, and who may issue certified copies.

All deaths registered locally enter the TxEVER statewide electronic system. Once in TxEVER, records are accessible from both the local office and DSHS. This is why you can often order the same record from the county clerk, the city health department, or through the state.

Jefferson County uses a Medical Examiner's office for deaths requiring investigation. The legal framework is in Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 49. The medical examiner certifies cause of death in unattended, sudden, or suspicious cases.

Administrative rules governing death registration for all county clerks and local registrars in Texas are in 25 TAC 181.31. These rules apply to both the Jefferson County Clerk and the city health department.

Historical Records and Genealogy

Jefferson County death records go back to 1903. Beaumont's role as a major refining and industrial center attracted large numbers of workers in the early 20th century, and the records from that period reflect significant population growth and demographic diversity.

FamilySearch has free access to Texas death records including Jefferson County. Records include index entries and images of original certificates going back to 1903. No subscription is required. This is a good first stop for genealogy research on Beaumont and Southeast Texas families.

Ancestry.com has a large Texas collection with strong search tools. A paid subscription is needed. The platform is useful for cross-referencing death records with census data, city directories, and newspaper archives. Beaumont newspapers from the early 1900s are well-preserved and often contain obituaries not captured in official vital records.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission holds statewide records and genealogy research guides. The Beaumont Public Library and the Southeast Texas Genealogical and Historical Society also maintain local history collections that are particularly strong for the Beaumont and Golden Triangle area.

Jefferson County has several historical cemeteries including Magnolia Cemetery, which dates to the mid-1800s. Cemetery indexes for Beaumont-area cemeteries are available through local genealogical societies and through FamilySearch.
